TEÁOR'25: what do Hungarian activity codes mean?
All four levels of an activity code live inside the same number — you just need to know where to cut it.
What is TEÁOR?
TEÁOR is Hungary's uniform sectoral classification of economic activities: it assigns a code to every economic activity. The company registry court, the tax authority (NAV) and the statistical office (KSH) all use it, and it decides which industry a company belongs to in official statistics.
The system is maintained by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office and is aligned with the European NACE classification — which is why every Hungarian code corresponds to an EU code.
TEÁOR'25: what changed
TEÁOR'25, in force from 2025, replaced TEÁOR'08, used since 2008. The change is not cosmetic: activities moved between groups, old codes were abolished and new ones created — typically where new lines of business have grown up over the past decade and a half.
This means a code found in a 2024 document does not necessarily exist today, and even if it does, it may not mean the same thing. That is why every code page of ours states which TEÁOR'08 code or codes correspond to it.
The four levels of the code
The code is hierarchical: the more digits you read, the narrower the category.
- Section — one letter, for example A (agriculture) or C (manufacturing).
- Division — two digits, for example 68 (real estate activities).
- Group — three digits with a dot, for example 68.3 (real estate agency and management services).
- Class — four digits, for example 68.32 (management of real estate). This is the most detailed level, and the one that appears in the company registry.
Main activity and the rest
A company has one main activity but may register any number of others. The main activity is the one producing the largest share of its revenue — not the one that sounds best. Statistics and industry classifications go by the former, and so do we.
The list of registered activities is public in the company registry, so you will find it on each of our company profiles.
Where to look up a code
Every TEÁOR'25 class has its own page on our site: with the full classification path, the TEÁOR'08 equivalents, the other codes in the same group, and the companies that have registered that activity.
Frequently asked questions
What does the abbreviation TEÁOR stand for?
Hungary's uniform sectoral classification of economic activities. It assigns a code to every economic activity, and the registry court, NAV and KSH all use it.
From when is TEÁOR'25 in force?
From 2025, replacing TEÁOR'08 in use since 2008. Activities moved between groups, old codes were abolished and new ones created, so a code in an older document may no longer exist.
How many digits does a TEÁOR code have?
The most detailed level, the class, has four digits with a dot after the second — for example 68.32. Shorter forms are broader categories: two digits for the division, three for the group, one letter for the section.
Can a company's TEÁOR code change?
Yes. The main activity is the one producing the company's largest revenue, and when that changes, so does the classification. The introduction of TEÁOR'25 also reclassified many companies' codes.
